Haas F1 Team Principal Unfazed by Esteban Ocon’s Controversial Reputation Ahead of 2025 Season
EXCLUSIVE: Haas Chief Unfazed by Chatter on Esteban Ocon's Team Dynamics
In an exclusive interview with Crash.net during the Dutch Grand Prix, Haas leader Ayao Komatsu revealed he's not worried about the perception that Esteban Ocon doesn't play well with others.
Haas F1 team leader Ayao Komatsu has expressed indifference towards the chatter about Esteban Ocon's perceived lack of teamwork, stating he's "not concerned" by these rumors.
Ocon is set to team up with Haas for the 2025 Formula One season, partnering with Oliver Bearman and providing the US team with a completely fresh pair of drivers for the upcoming year.
Throughout his tenure in Formula 1, the French driver has become known for a number of on-track confrontations with different teammates.
Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso, and Pierre Gasly have each experienced conflicts with Ocon throughout their careers.
Not every issue may directly be blamed on Ocon, but there's a prevailing view about the ex-Mercedes junior's fit in a team context.
In an exclusive interview with Crash.net at the Dutch Grand Prix last month, Komatsu disclosed that Ocon's reputation was a topic of conversation and that they engaged in "sincere" discussions about it throughout the negotiation process.
"Komatsu mentioned, "The topic was up for debate, but my opinion has been the same from the start. I needed to have a candid conversation with Esteban to grasp his perspective on all these matters.
"In my opinion, the key thing is maintaining a healthy, respectful relationship marked by mutual respect and openness. As long as there's a solid foundation of trust between the team and the driver, there shouldn't be any problems."
In contrast to his roles in past squads, Ocon is set to emerge as the most experienced driver and the unofficial leader at Haas.
Komatsu firmly believes that as long as there is "openness" and "confidence" between Ocon and Bearman, there will not be any problems.
"Komatsu expressed confidence, stating, 'I genuinely think it won't pose a problem. He's an exceptionally skilled and determined driver. The key is establishing clear guidelines for conduct at the season's outset. We need to outline the rules we'll adhere to, along with our expectations for both the drivers and the team, ensuring everything is transparent."
"It may become necessary to issue a command to our drivers, such as maintaining their current positions or ceasing their progression, a directive they might not align with. However, compliance is expected, and we can address any concerns or discussions following the action."
"As long as everything is open and trustworthy, I truly think there won't be any problems. All the chatter doesn't concern me."
