Gutierrez Cleared After High-Speed Clash with Alonso at Australian GP: A Spectacular Escape for Both Drivers
Gutierrez exonerated following dramatic Alonso crash
Esteban Gutierrez has been absolved of responsibility for the race-halting crash involving Fernando Alonso at the Australian Grand Prix.
In a harrowing incident on lap 18 at turn three, Alonso's vehicle flipped over multiple times following a collision with the rear of Gutierrez's Haas car, eventually hitting a barrier and embedding itself in the gravel. Remarkably, despite the intense collision that left the McLaren overturned against a barrier, both Alonso and Gutierrez emerged without injuries.
Gutierrez became the subject of an inquiry for potential wrongdoing after appearing to decelerate abruptly, yet upon review, officials determined that 'no driver was entirely or mainly at fault'.
Indeed, Alonso expressed that he believed there was no one at fault and even considered the possibility that he might have been responsible for getting too close and misjudging the distances.
"If he slowed down sooner, it's because he was adjusting for his own race path, and I need to be mindful of that as well. When concentrating on the slipstream, all you notice is the back wing, and I likely reacted too slowly. At this stage, there's no need to elaborate further; thankfully, we're both fine."
