Guenther Steiner Defends Max Verstappen Amid FIA Swearing Controversy
F1's Most Infamous Potty Mouth Comments on FIA Swearing Issue
Guenther Steiner Weighs In on Max Verstappen's Use of Profanity
Guenther Steiner has expressed his disagreement with the choice to penalize Max Verstappen for using profanity.
The Red Bull racer received a community service punishment after calling his RB20 “f*****” during a press conference in Singapore.
Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris disagreed with the FIA's ruling to sanction Verstappen, who expressed his frustration through his own demonstrations.
Former Haas team principal Steiner was once known as the most infamous user of profanity in F1.
His use of profanity gained widespread recognition in Netflix's series Drive To Survive.
However, he mentioned on the Red Flags podcast that, “You have never heard me using profanity during a press conference or in any similar situation.”
Yet, he defended Verstappen.
Steiner commented that he didn't believe the actions taken were excessive, clarifying that Max was discussing issues related to his car, not an individual.
"Could he have selected different words? Absolutely."
"He mentioned that the term is frequently used. Indeed."
"It may not be correct, but does that make it incorrect? Perhaps not."
"I am quite undecided about this matter."
During the race, I completely get it when they speak on the radio because the adrenaline levels are through the roof.
“You don't really mean what you say there. It doesn't follow you home.”
"Formula 1 is quite skilled at censoring it. They manage to bleep out a couple of words…"
"I believe it wasn't essential to turn it into such a major issue."
Steiner recalled a previous FIA rule aimed at penalizing F1 drivers who wore jewelry within the paddock, which irritated Hamilton.
Steiner recalled that, for him, it was quite similar to the jewelry.
"We're currently in the year 2024. That's what I'm trying to acknowledge. If someone has an earring, does it matter to me? Not at all."
