The latest Audi A5 Avant has expanded in size, yet it offers increased space only in certain areas compared to its predecessor

The A4 has been retired, at least as a combustion engine model. Moving forward, the traditional mid-sized estate sporting the four rings will be known as the Audi A5. This change aligns with the brand's new naming convention where models with combustion engines will bear odd numbers on their trunk lid, reserving even numbers for electric vehicles.

Aside from the name, there are of course a multitude of updates to the A5, including changes to its size and spatial arrangement. Let's take a closer look at what has changed in one of Ingolstadt's most significant vehicles in this area.

The latest Audi A5 Avant model has notably increased in size compared to the previous A4 Avant model, especially in terms of length, which has expanded by 67 mm to a total of 4.82 meters. Additionally, the wheelbase has extended by 7 centimeters, now measuring 2.89 meters.

The vehicle's width has expanded slightly by 13 millimeters, now measuring 1.86 meters. More noteworthy than its height of 1.46 meters might be the proportion of glass to metal in the side view, which is a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio, a feature that Audi's designers are keen to highlight as a distinctive trait.

During an initial sitting, it was evident that the new Audi A5's comfort level has significantly surpassed that of the A4. The redesigned dashboard impresses, with premium materials throughout, and the increased wheelbase to 2.89 meters benefits rear seat passengers immensely. The A5 notably provides more room than its predecessor.

The trunk space, however, does not follow this trend. The storage capacity ranges from 476 to a maximum of 1,424 liters, which is less than what the A4 Avant offers, with its 495 to 1,495 liters, and is also somewhat disappointing when compared to similar models in its class. Additionally, there's no double floor option because the space under the loading area is occupied by the 48-volt battery that powers the MHEV Plus engines.

The new Audi A5 Avant faces a select few rivals when considering its size and upscale market placement. Primarily, it goes head-to-head with the BMW 3 Series Touring and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate. The Volvo V60 is also a contender, but beyond that, the list is short. Although all these competitors are shorter in length compared to the Audi, they do provide slightly more cargo space. However, the A5 shines by offering the most rear passenger space.
