The Green Party is set to call on the government to implement a wealth tax when Chancellor Rachel Reeves presents her inaugural budget next month.
Speaking at his party's yearly gathering in Manchester, co-leader Adrian Ramsay emphasized that the UK must prioritize funding for public services and environmental protection. He suggested this could be achieved by modifying the tax system to increase contributions from the wealthiest individuals.
He anticipated that Ms. Reeves would claim the treasury was empty because of the £22 billion deficit that, according to Labour, was created by the previous Conservative administration.
Mr. Ramsay stated he planned to inform the chancellor that "she's searching in the wrong direction," criticizing her for understanding "the cost of everything but the worth of nothing."

Throughout their campaign, the Green Party proposed a wealth tax that would impose a 1% tax on assets valued above £10 million and a 2% tax on assets exceeding £1 billion. They argued that this measure would generate £15 billion by the conclusion of the parliamentary term and would affect less than 1% of households in the UK.
On Friday, Mr. Ramsay reiterated his commitment, stating, "Compared to many other European nations that understand the necessity of investing in top-notch public services and a more sustainable economy, [these tax] adjustments are quite restrained."
"I fervently advocated for a wealth tax throughout the general election campaign, and I intend to continue that advocacy on budget day.
"Every time the government asserts that there's no budget for essential climate initiatives, or to guarantee everyone a secure, reasonably priced, warm house, or to support our dearly valued NHS, I will respond in the same manner daily."
The co-leader committed to collaborating with Labour on shared interests, such as developing onshore wind initiatives and re-nationalizing the railways.
He also stated, "In numerous important areas, which are significant to many of us, Labour is making mistakes."
In a discussion with Sky News following the speech, Mr. Ramsay noted, "The previous administration definitely left the nation in disarray. However, Labour has more options than they claim."
"They've opted for particularly harsh measures, such as reducing winter fuel allowances for countless retirees… [maintaining] the two-child benefit limit, which has pushed an additional 300,000 children into poverty unnecessarily.
"Funding for environmentally conscious agriculture practices is being reduced. This is detrimental to both agricultural producers and the environment.
"Other options are available that will allow us to fund our community services and protect the environment."
