GM Ponders Electrifying Comeback for Camaro as a Four-Door EV Aiming for Affordability

Coverage indicates that General Motors is considering an electric version of the Chevy Camaro. The final unit of the iconic sports car rolled off the production line towards the end of 2023, pausing its legacy. However, Mark Reuss, the president of General Motors, has expressed his desire to Motor Trend for the Camaro's return in an electric form.

General Motors is considering a strategy that diverges from that of competitor Ford, who has extended the Mustang brand to include the Mach-E electric crossover, available concurrently with the classic petrol-powered two-door models. As reported by Motor Trend, Reuss envisions the future electric Camaro to remain true to its car heritage rather than transitioning into a crossover. Despite this, the Chevy Blazer EV, which stands as Chevrolet's counterpart to the Mach-E, has debuted with numerous design elements reminiscent of the Camaro.

2024 Model of the Chevy Cam

Reportedly, if an electric Camaro were to be released, it would break tradition by featuring four doors, a departure from all previous Camaro models. The rarity of sports cars and convertibles with EV skateboard platforms is due to the numerous design challenges they present, and the relatively low sales of two-door vehicles don't warrant the complex engineering required. However, this opens up the possibility for a four-door coupe along the lines of the existing BMW i4.

Reuss is keen on creating a Camaro EV that prioritizes the brand's original values of being straightforward and cost-effective rather than just focusing on power and speed. In a discussion with Motor Trend, Reuss mentioned that the entry-level price for a Camaro EV might be comparable to the Chevy Equinox EV crossover's initial cost of $34,995.

GM is set to expand its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the Chevy Bolt EV and the Equinox EV, both of which could be priced below $40,000.
