George Russell Takes High Road After Team Decision at Emilia Romagna GP Leaves Him Behind Hamilton
George Russell Won't Dwell on Falling to P7 Following Mercedes' Request to Switch Radios
George Russell discusses his Mercedes team's radio communication request following his additional pit stop, which resulted in him being overtaken by Lewis Hamilton.
George Russell has dismissed any concerns over being overtaken by his Mercedes colleague Lewis Hamilton for the sixth position at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Russell stood out among the top 10 drivers by opting for a second pit stop in the closing stages of the race due to worries over his tyres lasting until the finish.
The UK racer had a stable performance that afternoon, maintaining the sixth position, with a four-second lead over Hamilton.
Russell's pit stop resulted in Hamilton overtaking him, but he managed to secure the fastest lap due to his new tires.
During a pit stop for new tires, Russell inquired if Mercedes would instruct Hamilton to relinquish his position to him towards the race's conclusion, a plea that Mercedes refused.
In a conversation with Sky Sports following the race, Russell mentioned he wouldn't dwell on being overtaken by Hamilton.
"He mentioned, 'Achieving only a P6 and P7 will never bring satisfaction,' adding, 'Ultimately, as a collective, we managed to secure an additional point.'"
"I was overtaken by Lewis, but honestly, I won't dwell on dropping to sixth place."
"Currently, we find ourselves in a somewhat isolated position, trailing behind the Ferraris and McLarens, yet leading the middle pack."
Imola extended Mercedes' disappointing beginning to the season, as the team didn't secure a podium finish in the first seven races.
This signifies Mercedes' poorest season opening since 2011, despite consistently introducing major improvements to the W15.
Russell is confident that the entire Mercedes team continues to be highly driven and that their spirits haven't waned in the slightest, despite their unexpected string of poor performances.
"He also mentioned that everyone is maintaining a high level of motivation. Remarkably, there's no decline in team spirit."
"It's truly motivating to witness. Everyone is putting in the effort to ensure this succeeds and gets better."
All team members in Brackley and Brixworth are operating at maximum effort at this moment. It's wonderful to witness.
"We must continue to strive forward. This weekend, we achieved our potential. Our car had the capability to secure the 6th and 7th positions. That's exactly how we qualified and ultimately, how we crossed the finish line."
