Future of Portimao MotoGP in Jeopardy: Miguel Oliveira Urges Government Intervention to Secure Event’s Place on 2025 Calendar
Miguel Oliveira: Concerns over Portimao MotoGP? "Support from the government is essential"
“The continuation of the GP depends on the government covering the fee.”
Miguel Oliveira, a prominent Portuguese MotoGP rider, has admitted that the Portimao race in his home country might be removed from the MotoGP schedule.
The tentative MotoGP calendar for 2025, which kicks off in Buriram, Thailand on March 2, is anticipated to be revealed soon.
Since its addition to the MotoGP schedule in 2020, Portimao has relied on government backing to ensure the event's financial stability, according to Oliveira.
Oliveira, who is preparing to move from Trackhouse to Pramac Yamaha next season, urged the government to acknowledge the beneficial effects of the grand prix.
"It's disappointing," Oliveira commented regarding the speculation that Portimao could be excluded from the 2025 schedule.
"The Algarve administration put in a significant amount of effort to organize the Grand Prix. They received financial support from local municipalities to cover the fee required by Dorna, without any involvement from the government."
"In order for the Grand Prix to proceed, the government must cover the cost. It’s as straightforward as that."
The rider, who has won the MotoGP championship five times, stated, "It's important for the government to realize that they gain from this."
"The MotoGP event significantly boosts the local economy and enhances Portugal's global image. It's crucial for the government to recognize this and take action to support it."
Locations in Europe scheduled for the 2025 calendar are experiencing strain as Brno makes a comeback.
In the meantime, Hungary's Balaton Park Circuit, which is in discussions with Dorna to potentially host MotoGP and WSBK races and is already set as the reserve circuit for 2024, is organizing a press conference for next Thursday.
