Franco Morbidelli Breaks Podium Drought with Spirited Sprint at Misano Grand Prix
Franco Morbidelli experienced a genuine sprint race to conclude his MotoGP podium dry spell at Misano.
"It's been some time since I last felt this way"
Franco Morbidelli expressed that he managed to compete in a "genuine sprint race" during the MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix, where he concluded the event with a third-place finish on Saturday, breaking his series of races without a podium.
The Pramac competitor has faced a challenging season after joining the Ducati team, with the Italian rider missing the entire pre-season due to a concussion, consequently beginning the season at a disadvantage.
In the latest races, Morbidelli has begun to demonstrate impressive speed with the GP24, and during the Misano event, he secured a front-row start for the first time since the 2021 Spanish Grand Prix.
During the race, he successfully held back Enea Bastianini, who rides for the official Ducati team, to claim the third place on the podium. This achievement was his first in a sprint race and his first podium finish since the Jerez event in 2021.
Morbidelli acknowledges he falls short in certain aspects when measured against the top Ducatis, yet believes the pace he demonstrated was authentic.
"He started, 'It was an amazing Saturday.'"
"In the morning, we secured positions at the front row, and by the afternoon, we successfully engaged in an actual sprint race, emphasizing the pace."
"The leading pair maintained an incredibly consistent pace, and we succeeded in keeping up with them."
"We fell short in certain aspects, yet ultimately, it was sufficient to secure third place."
"I'm quite pleased. We aim to make some enhancements and improve by tomorrow. We'll find out if we succeeded."
Morbidelli noted, "It's been quite some time since I last felt this way while riding."
"Now, I'm starting to recapture that sensation, which is definitely boosted by observing myself in the top spot. I'm keen on maintaining that status."
The previous victor of the Misano Grand Prix is poised to be a strong contender for a podium spot in Sunday's upcoming race, according to Morbidelli. However, he emphasizes the importance of selecting the right tires for his performance.
"To start, we need to select the tire," he mentioned.
"Selecting the appropriate option is crucial, as is taking additional measures to enhance performance and improve satisfaction in certain aspects."
