Ford’s Mondeo Evolution: The Sporty New Addition Thrives in China While Europe Bids Farewell
A sporty version of the Ford Mondeo has been introduced… but it's not available in our region.
The previous model, Ford Evos, has been rebranded and now supplements the Ford Mondeo lineup in China.
We've previously discussed Ford's gradual phasing out of its traditional mass-market models in Europe. The phase-out began with the Mondeo in 2022, with the Fiesta and Focus set to follow. However, the Mondeo moniker hasn't completely disappeared. True to its meaning of "world," it continues to exist in a different guise in the Asian market.
To be more specific, the location is China. In 2022, they introduced a fresh Mondeo model. It boasts the appearance of a hatchback but with a compact rear deck typical of a sedan. Another notable feature is the massive expanse of screens inside, stretching across the entire dashboard. It measures an impressive 1.1 meters in width!

The Mondeo model available in China measures 4.93 meters in length, 1.87 meters in width, and 1.50 meters in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,945 millimeters. These dimensions are quite comparable to contemporary European mid-size cars such as the VW Passat Variant or the Skoda Superb.
Under the hood, the Mondeo is only available with gasoline engines. It offers a choice between a 1.5-liter engine producing 190 horsepower or a 2.0-liter engine with 254 horsepower, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. There's also a hybrid option that delivers a total system power of 208 horsepower.
The starting price is set at 149,800 Yuan, which is approximately 19,200 Euros. This affordable pricing is made possible due to the manufacturing taking place in China by Changan-Ford.
The driver's area inside the 2022 Ford Evos and Mondeo models
So, what's the deal with the latest Ford Mondeo Sport? Technically, it's not exactly fresh off the production line. It's actually the rebranded version of the former Evos, a 4.92-meter long SUV crossover derivative of the Chinese-market Mondeo. In July 2024, it got a new moniker, Mondeo Sport, to highlight its connection to the Mondeo lineage. Since then, the sole powertrain option is a hybrid engine boasting a combined output of 308 horsepower.
Is Ford Facing a Crisis?
Interesting tidbit: Both the Mondeo and Mondeo Sport models are built on the same Ford-C2 platform as the Focus (which is set to be discontinued in 2025) and the recently revamped Kuga. In 2022, Ford Germany quickly refuted rumors that the latest Mondeo and the Evos would be released in Europe. However, in the Middle East, it's sold under the name Ford Taurus.
We believe that the Chinese Mondeo pair would also perform well, but no one is asking us…
