Ford’s Future on Four Doors: CEO Farley Hints at a Mustang Sedan While Dismissing Electric Pony Car Dreams
Ford's chief doesn't rule out a Mustang sedan
However, CEO Jim Farley states that an electric Mustang sports car will never become a reality
Mustang enthusiasts take note: Following Ford's controversial extension of the Mustang brand with the Mach-E, there might be a new unconventional model bearing the Mustang lineage on the horizon. During an interview with Autocar, CEO Jim Farley appeared receptive to the idea of introducing more vehicles under the expanded Mustang series. While he dismissed the possibility of certain types such as a compact crossover or an SUV, he did entertain the possibility of a Mustang-branded sedan.
Is it possible for us to present alternative body styles for the Mustang, such as a four-door version or anything else? I think it's feasible, provided these versions maintain the power and essence of the classic Mustang.
Mustang purists may not be thrilled about the concept of a family-friendly version of the iconic car, but it appears that Ford has been considering this for quite some time. We have obtained official renderings from the American powerhouse, created by Senior Exterior Designer Christopher Stevens. These images surfaced back in mid-September 2022, coinciding with the official reveal of the S650 model.
The appealing design blueprint was showcased alongside additional drawings of the coupe. Some might concur that Ford could use another vehicle in its American lineup, especially since the Fiesta, Focus, and Mondeo have been phased out in recent years, leaving the Mustang as the sole passenger car, with the rest of the lineup consisting of SUVs and trucks.
There's a debate regarding whether a sleek sedan is worthy of the Mustang moniker or not. It appears that the car manufacturer from Dearborn isn't hesitant to profit from the renown of the name. Interesting tidbit: A four-door version was considered during the initial design phase of the original 1964 model.
Design Concept for a Four-Door Ford Mustang (1963)
Speculation about a four-door Mustang has been circulating since at least 2018. Initial reports suggested that Ford had even announced a sedan featuring a turbocharged V8 engine to dealers. However, these ended up being just rumors. The sketches and Farley's conversation with Autocar represent the closest thing we have to a four-seater Mustang to date.
Further Information on the Mustang:
Farley has plans to expand the Mustang lineup with additional models, as he disclosed to a British publication. Following the extremely costly GTD, he hinted at more to come. However, he stated that a solely electric variant, aside from the existing Mach-E, is not currently in consideration.
One thing I can assure you of is that we will never manufacture a purely electric Mustang.
The head of Ford stated that they have no plans to emulate Porsche's approach of consistently expanding the 911 series. One point that undoubtedly all enthusiasts would agree on is his proclamation that the classic V8 will endure as long as "divine powers and political figures permit." Although, it may eventually become a hybrid.
We conducted experiments and truly think that hybrid electric powertrains operate effectively for performance drivers.
