Ferrari’s Bold Strategy Triumphs: Fred Vasseur’s Racing Instinct Outshines ‘Nerdy Engineers
Ferrari leader's approach praised as different from that of "tech-focused engineers"
"Fred is a true racer. He trusts his instincts over computer-generated advice"
Fred Vasseur of Ferrari has been praised for his strategic pitstop decision that led to a victory at the F1 Italian Grand Prix last weekend.
Charles Leclerc trailed race leader Oscar Piastri by five seconds when the McLaren driver made his second pit stop.
Ferrari decided to keep Leclerc on a single-stop plan, leading to an impressive victory in front of the home crowd at their grand prix.
Nico Rosberg mentioned on the Sky F1 podcast that the assistance given to Leclerc was likely due to Fred's influence.
"Fred is a race car driver. He relies on his instincts and observations rather than computer guidance."
"It's a refreshing change from those tech-savvy engineers who are often glued to their screens and occasionally overlook the real world around them!"
"Moreover, it was a significant decision since the probability of securing a victory by taking that action was below 50%."
“It was a gamble, evaluating the probabilities, and thinking ‘we're in Monza, there's a 35-40% chance if we go for it…’”
Ferrari's Unexpected Chance at F1 Championship
Ferrari has secured victory in three races this season, with Carlos Sainz clinching a win in Singapore towards the end of 2023.
Earlier this year, Sainz secured another victory in Australia, followed by Leclerc achieving his first hometown win in Monaco.
Leclerc’s win in Monza last weekend was another highly emotional outcome for the Italian team.
Natalie Pinkham remarked that Charles finally secured his first victory in Monaco and highlighted the team's triumph at Monza.
"They desire more consistent performance. Their main issue has been the fluctuating results throughout the season, stemming from a lack of understanding of the car."
"They've mentioned that they 'don't understand' the situation, even when the car performs well. They are unsure about the source of the speed, and this uncertainty has been bothering them."
"The images are compelling and are expected to foster team unity for 2025 and into the future."
Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by 39 points in the race for the constructors’ championship.
Rosberg maintains that they should remain optimistic about their chances of victory: "Absolutely, it's a possibility."
"Given their current performance, they can't be considered the favorites. McLaren is clearly the frontrunner."
"Ferrari's performance will hinge on their recent upgrades. While it appeared promising in Monza, that track is unique. Will it perform well at other circuits?"
"If it continues to perform effectively, they might have an unexpected chance at winning the constructors' championship."
After securing victory at the Italian Grand Prix, Leclerc advised prudence regarding the major upgrade package aimed at resolving Ferrari's bouncing issues.
