Fernando Alonso Responds to Adrian Newey Rumor Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an imminent announcement from Adrian Newey this week
"I don't like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces difficulties
Fernando Alonso asserts that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, even as rumors persist about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer for Red Bull Racing, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be able to join a competing Formula One team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified lately, while rumors of him joining Ferrari have diminished.
"At Monza, Alonso commented that there are still just rumors circulating and that resolving the issues isn't solely the responsibility of one person."
"It's about evaluating our current situation and output. We need to identify what's working well and what's not, and use that insight to better prepare for 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract until the end of 2026. They are teaming up with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin is currently in fifth place in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th position, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of progress for Aston Martin ahead of a major push in 2026
“There’s not much we can do,” Alonso commented. “We rely on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"During a particularly inspiring weekend like this one, I am confident that it will remain entirely unnoticed."
"This year, both Lance and I have consistently finished races within two or three seconds of each other, either just ahead or just behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better and felt very comfortable with the car, pushing it perhaps beyond its limits. As a result, I achieved a P11 finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We must remain patient and remember that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those teams are very strong and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull indicates that we need to improve. We must elevate our standards and enhance our performance."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from finishing last to standing on the podium in just four months, providing a clear example of significant improvement.
“Similarly, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the first four races, we were neck and neck with them, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will see progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the car's current performance isn't satisfactory and won't improve until it receives an upgrade.
"Fell short in Monza. Underperformed in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"The strategy is set. Everyone on the team understands what’s happening and is giving their all. We’re staying together and continuing to push forward. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we almost got two points, and that’s the fight we’re in."
