Fernando Alonso Faces the Long Road Ahead as Aston Martin Eyes 2026 Revival
Fernando Alonso was straightforward about Aston Martin's advancements, saying, "We have a long journey in front of us."
Fernando Alonso has been informed that it could take more than a year for Aston Martin to achieve "something special".
Alonso signed a contract extension with the Formula 1 team that will keep him on board until the conclusion of the 2026 season, by which time he will be 45 years old.
However, this year they have lagged behind Red Bull, Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari.
During the Belgian Grand Prix last weekend, Alonso secured an eighth-place finish while his teammate, Lance Stroll, came in 11th.
Aston Martin’s reserve driver, Stoffel Vandoorne, mentioned on the F1 Nation podcast that the race was challenging. He stated that the team had anticipated a better performance over the weekend, given the car's traits.
"We anticipated having greater speed in a straight line, but we found ourselves at a disadvantage."
“With Fernando, we found ourselves in a middle ground. He secured a win among the second-tier teams, so to speak. We were significantly behind the front-runners but ahead of the rest of the pack.
“Regrettably, that's the situation we are currently facing.
“We have a lengthy journey in front of us.”
Alonso indicated that he intends to spend the rest of this year, following the summer break, addressing issues so that Aston Martin can make a strong comeback in 2025.
However, Vandoorne expressed that they haven't reached that point yet and mentioned that it would require some additional time.
“There are still plenty of opportunities in the second half of the year to improve conditions for the upcoming season.”
"Implementing upgrades is challenging, but it's crucial to grasp the underlying principles of these vehicles and identify what attributes are essential for their performance."
"The leading teams excel by identifying key areas for improvement and addressing them effectively."
"We introduce elements that are effective as well as some that are not fully functional. This is the aspect that needs attention."
Aston Martin has openly shared their bold objectives, which involve securing a longer contract for two-time Formula 1 champion Alonso.
Billionaire Lawrence Stroll is managing the development of a new main office at Silverstone, and in a couple of years, they will collaborate with Honda to comply with the upcoming engine rules.
The team is also looking to recruit Adrian Newey, who serves as the chief technical officer for Red Bull.
Vandoorne mentioned that the new wind tunnel is still under construction. He anticipates it will be operational by the year's end.
"It will be advantageous. However, initially, it will be difficult as it is a new instrument."
"There will be a different approach to operating within the system. Therefore, it won't improve immediately."
"We're developing a new simulation that should be completed by the end of the year."
"We are creating the opportunities needed to become a successful team. Next year is crucial for establishing a solid base for 2026."
"The year 2026 marks significant changes in regulations. Honda will be joining our team, presenting a major challenge but also a chance to achieve something remarkable."
By that time, Alonso will be 45 years old. However, he has already shown his commitment to his team's ambitious goals by signing a substantial new contract.
