Fernando Alonso Dismisses Quick Fixes Amid Adrian Newey Rumors: ‘Not a Fan of Excuses’ as Aston Martin Struggles Continue
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey's potential announcement this week
"I'm not one for making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing speculation surrounding Adrian Newey.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in the next few days.
Adrian Newey, who currently holds the position of chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his role at the beginning of the next year. Following his departure, he will have the opportunity to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about him joining Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors of a move to Ferrari have diminished.
Alonso commented at Monza, "There are still just rumors at this point, and I believe it's not a task that can be handled by just one person."
"It’s about evaluating our current situation and our production. We need to identify what is progressing well, what isn’t, and aim to improve things by 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a crucial edge as the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin is currently in fifth place in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th position, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of progress for Aston Martin in preparation for a major push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We rely on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving our all every weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, such as this one, I am certain that it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have often finished races just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or behind each other. This weekend, I managed to perform a bit better. I felt good about the car and pushed it possibly beyond its limits, which resulted in a P11 finish."
"Yes, it’s definitely disappointing. We have to stay patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top four position. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull is a clear indication that we need to step up our game and improve."
Regarding the car for next year, Alonso commented, “I believe we still have time to make adjustments.”
“Within a span of four months, McLaren advanced from the bottom to securing a spot on the podium. This serves as a clear example.”
“Mercedes kicked off the season just like we did. For the first four races, we were on par with them, and they’ve already secured three wins this year. So, I don’t believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming rounds.
“This car isn't up to standard, and it won't be until we get an upgrade,” Alonso complained angrily.
"Performance at Monza was subpar. It wasn't satisfactory in Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary either."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, we won't see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain united. We continue to push forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and this will be our ongoing challenge."
