Fernando Alonso Dismisses Quick Fix Amidst Adrian Newey Rumours as Aston Martin Struggles Persist
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an announcement involving Adrian Newey this week
"I don't believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, even as rumors about Adrian Newey's involvement persist.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's signing in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, will leave his position early next year, allowing him to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about him joining Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
Alonso commented at Monza, stating that the circulating information is merely hearsay and emphasized that resolving the issues isn't the responsibility of a single individual.
"It's about evaluating our current situation and production. We need to recognize what's working well and what's not, and then use that insight to better prepare for 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a crucial edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into constructing a new facility at Silverstone and extending Alonso's contract through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulatory changes.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place while his teammate, Lance Stroll, ended in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
"There’s nothing we can do," Alonso commented. "We are relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend."
"An inspired weekend like the one I'm experiencing now, I’m certain, will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have often finished the races very close to each other, usually just two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or behind. Today was one of those weekends where I performed a bit better. I felt satisfied with the car and pushed it to possibly more than its limits, which resulted in a P11 finish."
"Absolutely, it's disappointing. We must remain patient and recognize that our primary goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and RB means we need to elevate our standards. Improvement is essential."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being in last place to securing a podium finish in just four months. We have obvious examples of this progress."
"Additionally, Mercedes had the same start as we did. In the first four races, we were on par with them, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will see any progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the current state of the car is inadequate until it receives an upgrade.
"Fell short in Monza. Underperformed in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, we won't see significant differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's our strategy. The team understands the circumstances and is giving their all. We're staying cohesive and maintaining our efforts. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly earned two, and this will be our ongoing challenge."
