Fernando Alonso Dismisses Newey Rumours, Calls for Comprehensive Solutions at Struggling Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey's potential announcement this week
Fernando Alonso comments on Aston Martin's challenges, stating, "I don't believe in making excuses"
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, as speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement persists.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the signing of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently serving as the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be able to join and work for a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his next team has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
"At Monza, Alonso remarked, 'There are still just rumors, and I believe it's not the responsibility of just one person to make things right.'"
"It's about focusing on our current situation and production. We need to identify what's working well and what's not, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Newey being free next year means he could manage the development of the 2026 car for a different team, which could provide them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations are introduced.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin is currently ranked fifth in the constructors' championship. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th position, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 may serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major push in
“There’s not much we can do,” Alonso responded. “We are relying on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"A weekend full of inspiration, similar to this one, will remain entirely anonymous from my perspective."
"This year, Lance and I have been very evenly matched, often finishing races just two or three seconds apart. Today was one of those times when I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it to its limits, perhaps even beyond. As a result, I finished in P11."
"Yes, it's disheartening. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull now means we have to step up our game. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
“McLaren made significant progress in just four months, going from last place to securing a spot on the podium. This serves as a clear example."
“Similarly, Mercedes began the season just like we did. In the first four races, we were on par with them, and they've already secured three wins this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the current state of the car is inadequate and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance was lacking at Monza, Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"In my opinion, significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is putting in maximum effort. So yes, we stay together and keep striving. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that's the fight we'll continue."
