Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours, Calls for Team Effort as Aston Martin Struggles Continue
Fernando Alonso addresses the "rumor" of Adrian Newey's announcement this week
"I don't like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso maintains that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing rumors involving Adrian Newey.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the departing Chief Technology Officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, after which he will be at liberty to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might move to Aston Martin has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential switch to Ferrari have diminished.
"Currently, there are just speculations, and I believe that resolving the issues isn't solely the responsibility of one individual," Alonso stated at Monza.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and the outputs we're generating. We need to identify what's progressing well and what's not, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Newey being free next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, potentially offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations start.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into establishing a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin is currently in fifth place in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th position, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin in preparation for a major push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We’re really dependent on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"An inspired weekend like the one I'm having now will remain entirely anonymous."
This year, Lance and I have often been very close in our races, usually finishing within two or three seconds of each other, whether he's just ahead or just behind. Today was one of those weekends where I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it perhaps beyond its limits, which landed me in P11.
"Absolutely, it's disappointing. We have to stay patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we need to elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe there is still time for us to make adjustments."
"Within a span of four months, McLaren advanced from finishing last to securing a podium spot. Therefore, we have evident examples."
"Mercedes began the season just like we did. In the first four races, we were neck and neck with them, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I'm not interested in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will see progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, saying that without improvements to the car, their current performance is insufficient.
"Performance in Monza was subpar. The same can be said for Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
“I believe that significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components.”
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain united and keep striving. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that's the challenge we face."
