Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘It’s Not Only One Man’s Job
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I'm not one for making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, despite ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's potential involvement.
There were rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix that Aston Martin might reveal the signing of Newey in just a few days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. At that time, he will be available to begin working with a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified lately, while rumors of a move to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso commented that the information circulating is still just speculation and emphasized that solving the issues isn't the responsibility of just one person.
“It’s mainly about our current situation and our production output. We need to identify what is progressing well and what isn’t, and work on better preparations for 2025.”
Adrian Newey being free next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations are introduced.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract extension with Alonso through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in the 19th spot.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There's nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “Honestly, it's all up to our team, and both Lance and I are giving our best effort every weekend."
During a particularly creative weekend, such as this one, I am certain that it will remain entirely anonymous.
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in races, often finishing within two or three seconds of each other, either just ahead or just behind. This weekend, however, I had a slight edge. I felt really good about the car and was pushing it to its absolute limits, maybe even beyond 100%. That effort earned me P11."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We need to stay patient and recognize that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being behind Williams, Haas, and RB at this point suggests we need to elevate our performance. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, saying, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
“Within a span of four months, McLaren went from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium. This serves as a clear example
"Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the first four races, we were evenly matched, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show improvement in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the car's current performance is inadequate until an upgrade is made.
"Performance at Monza was lacking. The results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also subpar."
"I don't expect significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team understands what's happening and is working tirelessly. We're staying united and continuing to push forward. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we almost got two points, and that's the challenge we're facing."
