Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘No Excuses, We Must Improve
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation regarding an announcement from Adrian Newey this week
"I'm not one for making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces difficulties
Fernando Alonso maintains that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, despite ongoing speculation connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Reports from the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, the departing Chief Technology Officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about him possibly moving to Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
During an interview at Monza, Alonso commented, "Currently, there are just rumors, and I believe resolving these issues isn't the responsibility of just one person."
"It's largely about assessing our current situation and outputs. We need to identify what's working well and what isn't, and then strategize to improve things for 2025."
Adrian Newey being free next year means he could supervise the 2026 vehicle for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant benefit as the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine to meet the upcoming regulations.
However, up to now, the outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured an 11th place finish, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a preparatory phase for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"On a weekend filled with inspiration, much like this one I'm experiencing, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in our races, often finishing within two or three seconds of each other, either ahead or behind. This weekend, I performed slightly better, feeling satisfied with the car and pushing myself to the limit, perhaps even beyond. That effort resulted in finishing in 11th place."
“Indeed, it’s frustrating. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is 2026.”
"However, I believe as a group, we can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, currently being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull indicates that we need to improve our performance. We have to elevate our standards and enhance our capabilities."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being in last place to reaching the podium in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
"Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. For the initial four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current performance of the car is insufficient and won't improve until it gets an upgrade.
"Fell short in Monza. Underperformed in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that without introducing new components, we won't see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances and is giving their all. We're staying unified and continuing to exert maximum effort. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that's the challenge we're facing."
