Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amidst Aston Martin’s Ongoing Struggles: ‘No Excuses, We Need to Improve
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement
Fernando Alonso states, "I'm not one for excuses," amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso asserts that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, even as Adrian Newey remains a rumored potential addition to the team.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's signing in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, who currently holds the position of chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his role early next year. At that point, he will be at liberty to join and begin working with a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his potential new team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
“There are still just rumors, and I believe it’s not solely one person’s responsibility to resolve the issues,” Alonso mentioned at Monza.
"It's really about our current situation and what we're creating. It's important to identify what's working well, what isn't, and make sure we're better prepared for 2025."
Next year, Newey's availability could enable him to supervise the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a state-of-the-art facility at Silverstone and has secured a new deal with Alonso, extending his contract through 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. Alonso secured 11th place at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
"There’s nothing we can do," Alonso responded. "We are reliant on our team, and I believe that both Lance and I are putting in maximum effort every weekend."
"During a particularly inspiring weekend like this one, I am certain that my contributions will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have often been neck and neck, finishing races just two or three seconds apart, whether ahead or behind each other. This weekend, I had a slight edge, felt good about the car, and pushed myself perhaps beyond my limits, finishing in P11."
"Yes, it's disappointing, but we must remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe we can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four as a team. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"We currently find ourselves trailing Williams, Haas, and Red Bull. It's clear that we need to step up our game and improve."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
“McLaren went from being at the bottom to securing a podium finish in just four months. This is a clear example.”
“Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the initial four races, we were neck and neck with Mercedes, and they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't support making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is inadequate and needs an upgrade.
"Performance in Monza was lacking. It was also subpar in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
“I believe that significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team understands the circumstances and is giving their all. We're staying unified and continuing to strive forward. Last weekend we earned one point, and today we nearly secured two points. This will be our ongoing challenge."
