Fernando Alonso Addresses Speculation About Adrian Newey Announcement This Week
"I don't like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin’s issues requires more than the efforts of a single individual, despite ongoing rumors connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Rumors circulating among the Monza paddock at the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, after which he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his next team has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
"There are still just rumors, and I believe it's not solely one person's responsibility to resolve the issues," Alonso remarked at Monza.
"It's about focusing on our current status and what we are generating. We need to identify what's progressing well and what isn't, and aim to better prepare for 2025."
Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, which might provide them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that extends through 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulatory requirements.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could be a period of preparation for Aston Martin as they gear up for a major push in
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We are dependent on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
"Over a weekend filled with inspiration, such as this one, I am certain it will remain entirely unnamed."
This season, Lance and I have been very evenly matched, often just two or three seconds apart by the race's end, either ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better. I felt satisfied with the car and pushed myself perhaps more than I usually do, resulting in an 11th place finish.
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to be patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, as a team, we might come to terms with not competing for a top four position. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"Being behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull now means we must set higher standards. We have to improve."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have sufficient time to make adjustments."
"Within a span of four months, McLaren advanced from being in the last position to securing a spot on the podium. This serves as a clear
"Moreover, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. During the initial four races, we were on par with them, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't support making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is inadequate and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance in Monza was lacking. The results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also disappointing."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That’s our strategy. The team understands what’s going on. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain united. We continue to strive. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that’s the challenge ahead of us."
