Comparison of Mazda CX-80 and Skoda Kodiaq: Large Family SUV Showdown
These two 7-seater SUVs sport different engines, yet both provide ample interior space
For those frequently traveling with family or carrying heavy loads, the Mazda CX-80 and Skoda Kodiaq stand out as two of the most intriguing SUV options. Each model brings a unique philosophy and engine option to the table, with the CX-80 expanding on the features of the CX-60 in every aspect, and the Kodiaq now in its second market iteration. Let's dive into a detailed comparison of the two.
Exterior
When stacked up against the CX-60, the CX-80 extends an additional 25 cm in length and rises by 24 mm in height, reaching a total length of 4.99 m and a stature of 1.71 m, all in the pursuit of increased cabin space. However, the stylistic contours remain largely untouched, as Mazda preserves its sophisticated aesthetic, characterized prominently by the expansive front grille accented with chrome trim.

From a side view, the variations from the CX-60 are most noticeable, where the extended wheelbase, longer by 25 cm, is evident, particularly due to the additional window space. The alloy wheels can be as large as 20 inches, and the rear design is characterized by expansive bumpers and sizeable horizontal tail lights that wrap around the tailgate, giving it a robust appearance.

Latest Skoda Kodiaq Model
The latest Skoda Kodiaq model has seen a growth spurt, now measuring in at 4.76 meters which is an increase of more than 6 centimeters over its predecessor. The overall proportions have remained consistent, but the influence of the electric Enyaq's design is now more apparent. This is particularly noticeable in the grille, which features vertical slats reminiscent of the zero-emission Enyaq. Additionally, the vehicle boasts two-tiered LED matrix headlights.
Thanks to the updated designs, the drag coefficient has dropped to 0.28. There's also the addition of new alloy wheels ranging from 17 to 20 inches in diameter, and the rear features complex light clusters that converge beneath the "Skoda" emblem in the center. The Sportline trim level offers a slightly altered appearance with glossy black decorative elements.
Interior Design
Mazda places a significant emphasis on the craftsmanship of the upholstery, which uses a combination of leather, fabrics, and wood paneling to create an atmosphere reminiscent of a luxurious Japanese living room. The constant interplay of colors and textures adds to the sleek environment, which is also home to advanced technology. The CX-80 boasts a digital dashboard and a wide 12-inch touchscreen for infotainment purposes.
The latter supports both AppleCarPlay and Android Auto, and is also compatible with Amazon Alexa. It comes equipped with a 360-degree camera system and a variety of features that assist with trailer hitching. By the way, it has a towing capacity of 2.5 tons.
The trunk offers ample space, starting at 258 liters when the third row is in use. It expands to 687 liters with the configuration of five seats and can reach a maximum capacity of 1,971 liters.

The Kodiaq boasts a sleek and uncluttered dashboard that's highlighted by two prominent displays: a 10-inch screen for the gauges and a 13-inch screen for the infotainment hub. Its contemporary and streamlined design incorporates a mix of materials such as leather and high-quality plastics. The infotainment system is central to the vehicle's controls, with the exception of the air conditioning, which can be adjusted via dedicated rotary knobs located beneath the central air vent.
These rotary knobs serve multiple purposes, such as controlling both the seat heating and ventilation.

The Skoda offers ample space and even comes with an optional seven-seat configuration. In the plug-in hybrid version, the powertrain produces a combined 327 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. It also features a 17.8-kWh battery, which provides an approximate electric range of 50 kilometers.
The diesel model generates 254 horsepower and 550 Nm, achieving a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 8.4 seconds. The top speed hits 219 km/h. Both engines come equipped with four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
