Fabio Quartararo Claims Yamaha ‘Struggled Even More Than Hondas’ Despite Outperforming at British MotoGP
Fabio Quartararo: Yamaha faced greater difficulties than Honda at the British MotoGP
The 2021 world champion believed Yamaha was at a disadvantage compared to Honda, even though he outperformed Honda's riders in the British Grand Prix
Fabio Quartararo thinks that Yamaha faced greater difficulties than their Japanese MotoGP competitor Honda during the British Grand Prix, even though Yamaha ended up three positions ahead in both races.
The French driver started in 18th place at Silverstone but improved his position to 11th during both the sprint race and the main event.
Yamaha has shown significant improvements in its M1 model for 2024, outperforming Honda. However, after practice, Quartararo expressed that the updates introduced at Silverstone did not meet his expectations.
Even so, Quartararo maintained a lead of more than two seconds over the highest-placed Honda rider, Johann Zarco, who finished 14th. However, Quartararo admitted that he still had significant room for improvement.
"It looks better than it feels," he remarked about his motorcycle, referring to the vintage speed block design that Yamaha featured at the British Grand Prix to commemorate MotoGP's 75th anniversary.
"It improved slightly as we attempted to use the same bike from yesterday's sprint. However, there's still a significant gap."
"Although it might not be sufficient, we put in our best effort and can take pride in our actions."
When asked about being the top Japanese bike and competing with riders like Maverick Vinales and Jack Miller, Quartararo responded, “Yes, but we've had even more difficulties than the Hondas this weekend.”
"Our traction was worse compared to theirs, but as I mentioned, giving it my all was the only option available to me today."
"Ultimately, I managed to battle with Maverick and Miller, and Frankie [Morbidelli] passed me during the final lap."
“We are aware of our weaknesses and need to address them to improve our standing.”
Quartararo's performance at the British Grand Prix helped Yamaha maintain a solid lead over Honda in the manufacturers' standings. As they move on to the Austrian Grand Prix, where Honda is anticipated to unveil a new engine, Yamaha holds a 27-point advantage.
Yamaha unveiled a new engine specification before the summer hiatus. However, a third version, which is particularly favored by Quartararo, is still a few races away from making its public appearance.
