F1’s Underrated Star Nico Hulkenberg Defends Early Audi Move: ‘My Mind is Clear
F1’s often overlooked driver answers claims of “signing too early”
"I'm aware – and they are too – that the package needs enhancements."
Nico Hulkenberg has dismissed the notion that he rushed into signing with Audi, potentially missing out on superior opportunities.
Audi, the renowned German manufacturer, is set to join Formula 1 in 2026 as the new regulations are introduced.
In the upcoming season, the team will still compete under the Sauber name, and they have signed Hulkenberg from Haas on a multi-year contract. Hulkenberg will represent Audi in their Formula 1 endeavor as the prominent German driver.
Natalie Pinkham has described him as "one of the most underappreciated drivers."
Nico Hulkenberg faced criticism from F1 Nation podcast host Tom Clarkson for allegedly committing to a contract prematurely, considering his strong performance this season and the availability of other open seats.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Hulkenberg stated, "I don’t believe so. I don’t see any chances for me with any of the top four teams."
"My thoughts and conscience are at peace and clear."
Audi, on the other hand, is developing a fresh initiative. Despite their sky-high aspirations, they have yet to demonstrate any Formula 1 expertise.
Hulkenberg confessed, “Each team constantly assures you of great things! They say they are taking various actions and making improvements…”
"However, it's clear that Audi is a highly influential and significant brand globally."
"I understand the level of commitment they have, the resources they are putting in, and their efforts to ensure they remain competitive and achieve success."
Additionally, the rule change set for 2026 provides an excellent chance for a new manufacturer to enter the scene.
"This project represents a fresh start with new resources, personnel, financial backing, and the brand's influence. It is an exhilarating opportunity for both my career and personal growth."
This season, Sauber's drivers Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou have not managed to score any points in 14 races. Both drivers are currently at the bottom of the Formula 1 rankings.
Hulkenberg responded by saying, "I never suggested it would be easy or assured. There is definitely a long journey ahead, without question."
"Racing for Audi comes with significant ambition and pressure, as is typical when competing for a major car manufacturer."
"I'm not concerned. However, I'm aware – and they are too – that the package requires enhancement."
At 36 years old, Hulkenberg has impressed audiences with his performances in a Haas car, showcasing his skills on both Saturdays and Sundays this season.
Last season, Haas ended up at the bottom of the constructors' championship standings, but Hulkenberg has managed to score points in five races.
He has played a crucial role in advancing Haas to the seventh position in the constructors’ standings.
Hulkenberg stated that they were prepared to step in when the leading teams and cars encountered difficulties. He emphasized that being in a position to capitalize on these opportunities was significant for them.
"Last year saw significant changes in our technical department. Several team members departed, leading to a reorganization. Following that, Ayao joined us and implemented some adjustments."
"Previously, there were constraints, but now people in specific departments have been liberated. As a result, their work is more efficient and of better quality."
However, there is still one blemish on his record.
He holds the record for the most Formula 1 Grand Prix starts, with 217 races, without ever finishing on the podium.
To what extent does Hulkenberg think about that?
“None,” he chuckled. “That statistic exists, but it’s also true that Audi chose to support me, even though I haven’t won a grand prix, over other drivers who had victories under their belts at the time.”
"Statistics are always present, but they don't reveal the full reality."
He has landed what could be considered the most significant opportunity of his career after not being a full-time driver in the 2020 and 2021 F1 seasons.
Haas saved his career, and now he's repaying the favor.
"It's very much a fairy tale," Hulkenberg remarked.
In 2019, I felt exhausted from Formula 1 and decided I needed a break. I made a deliberate choice to step back and found joy in living outside the realm of motorsports.
“It gradually dawned on me that I wasn’t finished yet, and there were still things that needed to be done.”
"That period held great significance for me. It's an incredible motorsport tale and an unforeseen comeback…"
