F1 Icon Sir Jackie Stewart Predicts Challenges for Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Switch at 40
"Challenging Move" – Jackie Stewart Comments on Lewis Hamilton's Potential Transition to Ferrari
Formula 1 icon Sir Jackie Stewart offers his opinion on Lewis Hamilton's rumored move to Ferrari.
Renowned F1 champion Sir Jackie Stewart thinks that Lewis Hamilton's switch to Ferrari will be "more challenging" because of his age.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton stunned the Formula 1 community by revealing in February that he plans to depart from Mercedes and join Ferrari in a major move in 2025.
Hamilton will be 40 years old when he debuts with Ferrari at the Australian Grand Prix next season. Three-time world champion Stewart expressed that the timing of this decision "somewhat surprised" him.
"I'm a bit taken aback by that, considering I'm turning 40 and joining a team that has just recently become highly competitive," Stewart mentioned on the RacingNews365 podcast.
Ferrari's performance has significantly declined. The Formula 1 team has experienced numerous changes in management, leading to disruptions.
"The environment around them has become more stable now. Additionally, when Lewis visits the Ferrari factory, he finds it impressive."
"Few brands in Formula 1 have maintained the same level of continuity and long-standing presence as Ferrari."
Stewart commented, "I believe it's harder for him to accomplish this at 40 years old than it would have been when he was 25 or 30."
"However, his abilities remain intact. This was evident during this year's British Grand Prix, where Hamilton broke a two-year stretch without a victory."
"It's uncommon for someone to join Ferrari at this stage, but eventually, he will need to step back from racing. He believes that moment hasn't come yet, which I can understand."
Stewart, however, gets why driving for Ferrari is tempting, as he nearly signed with the iconic Italian team but ultimately decided against it.
"I had agreed to race for Ferrari, but I had to inform them that it was no longer feasible because the situation with Mr. Ferrari was constantly changing. As a result, I never ended up driving for Ferrari," he clarified.
"However, upon my arrival, I was astonished. The place was incredibly impressive. The atmosphere was remarkable. The Italians are wonderful individuals; they articulate their thoughts with great care and enthusiasm. I'm certain that Lewis has felt the same way."
