Evergrande Founder’s Ex-Wife Granted $26,000 Monthly Expenses Amid Asset Freeze in UK
The former spouse of Evergrande's founder receives a monthly allowance of $26,000 in the UK despite the freezing of assets. Ding Yu Mei, ex-wife of Hui Ka-yan, resides in a lavish London apartment and possesses $4 million in her British bank account, as per legal papers.
A British court has given Ding Yu Mei, the former spouse of China Evergrande Group's creator, Hui Ka-yan, permission to expend up to £20,000 (US$26,187) per month, following the freezing of her assets in a lawsuit initiated by the company's liquidators.
The action is intended to recoup approximately HK$2.8 billion (US$359 million), which is the amount transferred via two of her business entities as dividends from 2018 to 2020. According to legal papers, Ding was given monthly living costs and permitted to cover legal charges up to £350,000 in August.
According to last year's stock exchange records, she had a 5.99% ownership in Evergrande. As stated in a court paper from August 29, Ding has more than US$4 million in her UK bank account. The 67-year-old Ding resides in a high-end apartment in London, located in Thames City. This project was developed by CC Land Holdings, a Hong Kong-based company led by Cheung Chung-kiu, a long-time associate of Hui.
Attorneys representing Ding chose not to respond, and messages seeking a response from the lawyers of Evergrande's liquidators went unanswered.
