End of an Era: Repsol and Honda to Conclude Iconic MotoGP Partnership After Nearly Three Decades
Official Announcement: Repsol to Cease Title Sponsorship of Honda's MotoGP Team
Repsol's long-standing and well-known title sponsorship of Honda's official MotoGP team is set to conclude at the end of this year.
Repsol plans to conclude its main sponsorship of Honda's official MotoGP team after the 2024 season.
Since 1995, the Spanish oil firm has been the primary sponsor for HRC. However, reflecting potential future changes, their logo was moved to a less prominent position on the lower fairing in this year's redesigned livery.
The dissolution of the Repsol-Honda alliance concludes one of the most triumphant collaborations in the sport's history, securing 15 riders' championships with legends like Mick Doohan, Alex Criville, Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden, Casey Stoner, and Marc Marquez.
Nonetheless, the squad has not secured a race triumph since Marc Marquez's previous Honda victory at Misano in 2021.
Last year, the Spanish racer switched from Honda to Gresini Ducati. This move highlighted the decline of the once-dominant HRC team, as Repsol Honda now sits at the bottom of the team rankings in 11th place.
It remains uncertain whether Repsol plans to support a competing MotoGP team, as the company has stated only that it will 'remain connected to motor racing'.
Starting in 2027, MotoGP will switch to using fuel that is entirely derived from non-fossil sources, a move that seems to have gained approval from Repsol.
A statement was issued right after the San Marino MotoGP on Sunday, where neither Joan Mir nor Luca Marini from Repsol Honda participated due to illness.
Repsol has decided not to extend its contract with HRC in MotoGP.
Repsol has decided not to extend its existing sponsorship agreement with Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) for the MotoGP World Championship, which is set to expire on December 31 of this year.
The Repsol Honda Team holds the record for the most success in championship history, securing eleven team championships, 15 rider championships, and 183 wins in the top tier of motorcycle racing.
Repsol appreciates HRC's dedication and hard work throughout the years of our collaboration.
The energy company will maintain its association with motor racing to keep advancing top-notch products and services.
According to a declaration from HRC:
Honda Racing Corporation and Repsol will conclude their partnership after 2024.
After three decades of working together in premier motorcycle racing, Honda Racing Corporation and Repsol will end their partnership when the 2024 MotoGP World Championship season finishes.
Honda HRC and Repsol have formed a partnership that is known for its high level of success. This relationship extends beyond mere sponsorship; it represents a genuine collaboration between the two companies, aiming to remain a benchmark in Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
First appearing in 1995, the Repsol Honda Team quickly found success, securing the Premier Class World Championship in their inaugural year. Over the next thirty years, the partnership between Honda HRC and Repsol has amassed 15 Premier Class World Championships, 10 Premier Class Team Championships, 183 Premier Class victories, and 455 Premier Class podium finishes.
"Honda HRC extends its best wishes to Repsol for their upcoming business and sports endeavors."
