End of an Era: Renault to Halt F1 Engine Production, Alpine to Adopt Mercedes Units in Strategic Shift
Renault plans to halt its Formula 1 engine manufacturing for the Alpine squad by the close of 2025, transitioning Alpine into a client team.
Renault has officially announced that its Formula 1 engine program will conclude by the end of 2025.
Starting in 2026, the Alpine team, which operates out of Enstone and is part of the French manufacturing group, plans to use Mercedes engines in accordance with Formula 1's upcoming engine rules.
The Viry-Chatillon site is set to be revamped into 'Alpine Hypertech', centering on the company's electric motor advancements and automotive initiatives.
The leadership at Alpine has verified its plans to convert the facility into a hub for engineering prowess and cutting-edge technology by the end of 2024, according to an official statement from Alpine.
"Formula 1 operations at Viry, aside from the creation of a new engine, will persist through the conclusion of the 2025 season."
Since making its debut in the sport in 1977, Renault has been manufacturing engines for Formula 1 for the majority of the last fifty years.
For several months, there had been speculation that Renault would cease production of its F1 engines, as the company faced challenges in matching up to competitors like Mercedes, Ferrari, and Honda ever since the introduction of the V6 hybrid power units in 2014.
"Establishing the Hypertech Alpine center is crucial for Alpine's growth plan and, on a larger scale, for the Group's strategy towards innovation," stated Alpine's CEO, Philippe Krief.
This moment marks a significant milestone in the development of the Viry-Châtillon facility, guaranteeing the preservation and integration of its unique expertise into the Group's forward-looking plans. It also bolsters Alpine's reputation as a hub of innovation.
The essence of racing continues to be a fundamental aspect of the brand. This will persist in driving an extraordinary venture in industry and automobile innovation, significantly aided by Hypertech Alpine.
