Embrace the Learning Curve: Max Verstappen’s Sage Advice to Andrea Kimi Antonelli Ahead of F1 Debut
'Embrace errors' – Max Verstappen's guidance to Kimi Antonelli before his probable F1 first appearance
Ahead of his anticipated debut in F1 the following year, Max Verstappen shared some crucial tips with Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Max Verstappen thinks Andrea Kimi Antonelli need not be overly concerned about stepping into F1 at a young age, drawing from his personal journey of entering the sport at 17.
At the 2015 Australian Grand Prix, racing for Toro Rosso, Verstappen set the record as the youngest ever Formula 1 driver to participate in a grand prix, being just 17 years and 165 days old.
Antonelli, widely rumored to be Mercedes' choice to succeed Lewis Hamilton in 2025, is set to celebrate his 18th birthday this coming August.
In his initial seasons in Formula 1, Verstappen showcased his remarkable natural skill and speed, yet frequently encountered errors or clashed with fellow competitors.
It wasn't until mid-2018 that Verstappen demonstrated significant maturity and steadiness, leading up to a remarkable series of seasons that concluded with his first major victory in 2021.
Antonelli might end up in a situation akin to Verstappen's if Mercedes decides to promote him despite his limited experience in single-seater racing.
In a conversation with a group of media outlets, including Crash.net, in Monaco, Verstappen shared insights from his initial years in Formula 1 as a young driver and offered some vital guidance to Antonelli.
"He remarked, hoping it wasn't too daunting, but pointed out your inexperience. "You've got a lot to pick up. For me, the major challenge was completing an entire race. Back in F3, races lasted about 35 minutes, and they were significantly more demanding.
Maintaining the tires plays a significant role, as these tires are much more specific and delicate than those in other series. While in F2 and F3, drivers already compete on Pirelli tires, that wasn't my experience initially.
"Experiencing the highs, the lows, and the journey of recovery from challenges, along with tough times when things aren't going your way, offers numerous lessons. However, it's also important not to overthink it. Just let things flow. When you possess talent, as Kimi clearly does with his exceptional skills, I believe there's no need for too much worry."
"Embrace errors. It's essential to err. It's best to do so during periods not critical for winning titles, something I was fortunate to experience starting with Toro Rosso. During that time, not everyone's eyes were on me, allowing the occasional slip-up. Such errors are crucial for growth. Constantly limiting yourself with thoughts of 'I can't do this, I can't do that' only hinders your progress. True adaptation and advancement come from making these mistakes and learning from them."
Since joining Red Bull in 2016, Verstappen has significantly influenced the team, shaping the car's development and customization to complement his driving preferences.
The thrice-crowned global champion emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with positive individuals during personal development.
"Additionally, he mentioned maturing not only personally but also beyond his experiences in the car," he said. "It's not ideal in one's personal life, and then there's the aspect of progressively getting to grips with the intricacies of a race car's setup.
Naturally, automobiles undergo development, and being part of a specific team gives you a fair understanding of what's effective and what isn't. Working closely with the same group of engineers and team members allows you to better adjust the vehicle to suit your needs. The longer you collaborate with them, the more intuitive the process becomes.
"Once more, avoid overanalyzing, simply allow things to flow naturally. At such a young age, the goal should be to push your speed to the limit, embrace the errors you make, aim for impressive performances in races, and try not to overthink. While you can make sense of these aspects now, back then, understanding them wasn't possible. Furthermore, you have the advantage of being surrounded by a supportive team that guides and mentors you through the process."
