Electrify America to Supercharge EV Infrastructure with a 25% Network Growth by 2024

On its six-year milestone since installing the initial rapid charger, Electrify America announced plans on Thursday for a significant 25% expansion of its electric vehicle charging stations by 2024.

EA is targeting the installation of 5,000 chargers by year-end, which will encompass more expansive charging hubs and enhanced compatibility with Plug & Charge payment technology.

By the close of 2023, the company had broadened its reach to include North Dakota and Hawaii, which propelled its network to exceed 4,000 charging stations.

The Alternative Fuels Data Center of the Department of Energy reports that, as of May 2, there exists a total of 931 Electrify America stations and 4,182 charging outlets; Electrify America counts these outlets as chargers. The proposed growth represents an approximate 20% surge compared to the existing infrastructure.

The power grid reports that their independently verified data shows a total of 10 million charging events by consumers in 2023, which is twice the count from the previous year. Additionally, the amount of energy provided saw a growth of over 100%.

On the same day, the firm highlighted that its growth plans for 2023 involve enhancing over 680 existing, less efficient charging stations to the latest model offered by Electrify America.

It's possible that EA's announcement was a reaction to accusations that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) failed to demand additional improvements in charger reliability during its most recent and ultimate 2.5-year review period. EA came into existence through a decree that formed part of Volkswagen's diesel scandal resolution, which required a $2 billion commitment over a decade. Out of that amount, EA directed $800 million towards the development of its charging infrastructure in California and other initiatives exclusive to the state.

The deployment of charging stations by EA has brought to the government's attention the significance of factoring in dependability and operational time when planning the expansion of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI).

Research conducted in 2022 centered on the Bay Area of California, known for its adoption of electric vehicles, revealed issues with the dependability of the fast-charging stations, including several new chargers from the EA network that were not working properly. However, despite issues with reliability, this network was rated highly in a poll that assessed customer satisfaction with the electric vehicle charging process.

San Francisco becomes home to the inaugural indoor charging facility by Electrify America.

In the early months of this year, Electronic Arts launched a premier electric vehicle charging hub in a city setting, introducing a novel concept for indoor power stations. It has been noted that Volkswagen has been seeai-allcreator.com">king potential buyers or partners for Electrify America, reaching out to various firms, including car manufacturers. However, to date, Siemens, a major German industrial group, remains the sole external investor.

Tesla's network of fast-charging stations has continually received top marks for pleasing its users. However, recent events might shift this trend as Tesla has just let go of the entire team responsible for their Superchargers.
