Eddie Jordan Questions Mercedes’ Decision to Promote Kimi Antonelli Directly to F1
Eddie Jordan expresses doubts about Mercedes, stating he doesn't have complete confidence in Kimi Antonelli.
"Right now, I can't see how Antonelli has justified his position. He hasn't fully convinced me yet."
Eddie Jordan thinks that instead of moving Andrea Kimi Antonelli straight into Lewis Hamilton's spot for the 2025 F1 season, Mercedes should have first put him in a team that competes in the middle of the pack.
During the Italian Grand Prix weekend, it was revealed that Antonelli would join the Mercedes team and partner with George Russell for the upcoming year.
This ruling allows Antonelli to begin his Formula 1 career in 2025 at the age of 18, presenting him with the chance to possibly become the youngest race victor in the sport when the new season starts.
Mercedes evaluated the possibility of signing more seasoned drivers like Carlos Sainz, and they also awaited updates regarding Max Verstappen's plans before ultimately deciding on Antonelli.
During the most recent episode of the Formula for Success podcast, Jordan, who previously owned the Jordan GP F1 team, expressed doubts about Mercedes' choice concerning Antonelli.
Jordan expressed that they had always believed the pressure from Mercedes would be overwhelming for Kimi, especially during his debut and initial performance.
"It happened as it did. He lost control and the car sustained significant damage. I still think Kimi has a place in racing, but not with Mercedes – that's the key point I want to emphasize. His speed doesn't matter to me."
"My perspective is that he should be positioned in a place that allows Toto and the team to gain experience over the year and develop from there."
Co-host David Coulthard mentioned that Verstappen began his Formula 1 career with Toro Rosso in 2015 and later advanced to Red Bull.
Jordan recommended that Mercedes should have followed a comparable strategy with Antonelli.
"That's precisely the right course of action," Jordan commented. "Max started out at Toro Rosso. Similarly, Kimi Antonelli ought to be with Williams, where Toto Wolff can position him. This is something we've advocated for a long time."
"Bernie Ecclestone always emphasized the importance of deserving what you seek. He would often say, 'You need to earn the right,' and that's all he would mention. 'Earn the right to make a request.'"
"Right now, I can't see how Antonelli has proven himself deserving of it. He hasn't convinced me completely. I apologize, everyone."
