Eddie Jordan Casts Doubt on Alonso’s Form: A Season of High Hopes Meets Reality
Fernando Alonso 'far from matching' Lewis Hamilton, says expert
"The mental aspect of what these drivers experience also crosses my mind."
Former Formula 1 team leader Eddie Jordan is of the opinion that Fernando Alonso is not operating at the standard he perceives himself capable of achieving.
Kicking off the year on a high note, competing closely with top contenders Mercedes and Ferrari, Aston Martin has once again, as in 2023, found themselves slipping down the rankings.
Aston Martin's slowdown in speed appears to have aligned with a decline in performance for Alonso.
Over 14 races, Lance Stroll has managed to qualify ahead of Alonso five times, compared to just three times throughout the whole 2023 season.
Alonso maintains a solid lead in the rankings, though it hasn't been as smooth sailing as it was the previous year.
On the Formula for Success podcast, Jordan scrutinized the recent performances of the two-time world champion.
"Jordan pointed out how Alonso's impressive performance at the start of the season is a clear example of this."
Currently, I would need to check his final position to determine if he's truly among the top 10.
"In yesterday's race in Belgium, he performed impressively, securing additional points for Aston. However, he's still far from reaching the potential he believes he's capable of."
Aston Martin began the previous year with impressive performance, frequently emerging as the closest competitor to Red Bull.
Jordan believes the decline in Aston Martin's performance is affecting Alonso's mental state, noting the contrast in achievements compared to Lewis Hamilton.
"He firmly believes that he's on par with Lewis [Hamilton] in terms of skill," he continued.
He anticipated competing against Lewis this season, but frankly, that has not occurred, and it doesn't seem likely to happen for the rest of the year.
"I also consider, from a psychological perspective, what happens in the minds of these men."
