Ducati’s Gigi Dall’Igna Advocates for Hybrid Innovation in MotoGP’s 2027 Regulations, Discusses Future of Racing Technology

Gigi Dall’Igna, the General Manager of Ducati Corse, has expressed his thoughts on the MotoGP rules set for 2027, showing a preference for hybrid engines.

Gigi Dall'Igna, the General Manager of Ducati Corse, has expressed his backing for MotoGP's recent decision to move forward with an 850cc engine format. However, he also conveyed his desire for the new rules to have been somewhat more daring.

"Dall'Igna expressed to GPone.com that he views the decrease in displacement [from 1,000cc to 850cc] as highly favorable."

"However, from my perspective, there are certain elements that don't quite hold up positively, given that this regulation is set to continue through 2032."

"I anticipated that we might have incorporated additional creative features regarding the bicycle and energy recuperation."

When questioned about whether he was referring to hybrid engines, such as KERS, Dall'Igna, whose motorcycles have secured the MotoGP championships for the past two years with Francesco Bagnaia, affirmed this.

"In my view, incorporating a bit of hybrid technology would have been a beneficial indicator. Undoubtedly, it was crucial to devise a strategy to manage expenses, given the substantial costs associated with those technologies."

"This might have been the reason [it didn't take place]… however, sourcing a sole provider for the pricier components [might have offered a workaround]. This could have introduced a fascinating aspect of creativity into the motorcycle industry."

He expressed his opinion that it is nonsensical to waste energy on braai-allcreator.com">king when it could be reclaimed. He further speculated that in two to three decades, vehicles would no longer use conventional braking systems, emphasizing that efficiency should be our main focus.

Dall'Igna mentioned that the decrease in the dimensions of the wings was inevitable because of the transition to a less potent 850cc engine. He anticipates that the performance will bounce back to its current standard by the year 2032.

Yet, "had we not implemented this alteration, our speed would have substantially increased."

Dall'Igna argued that the elimination of ride height mechanisms won't significantly affect Ducati, as their competitors have developed similar performing systems.

However, he reiterated the importance of integrating cutting-edge technology into MotoGP to enhance the spectator experience and add more excitement.

The recent GPS sharing program primarily benefits those in pursuit rather than those in the lead.

Talks are ongoing among the producers about either halting the production of current machines, or at least the engines, to focus efforts on advancing the 850cc motorcycles, with a probable implementation by 2026.

Dall'Igna, who leads the racing division that holds championships in both MotoGP and WorldSBK, also acknowledged that the SBK regulations must be updated to prevent their performance levels from matching those of MotoGP.
