Ducati Scales Back for 2025: Three Factory MotoGP Bikes Deemed ‘Best Compromise,’ Says Dall’Igna
Ducati clarifies why it will cut down the number of factory MotoGP bikes in 2025
"This is the optimal solution for us"
Gigi Dall’Igna, the general manager of Ducati, stated that the choice to lower the count of its factory MotoGP motorcycles to three in 2025 is "the best compromise" for the company.
Lately, Ducati has dedicated itself to deploying four top-tier factory bikes within its official team and the Pramac satellite team, while the remaining teams in its lineup receive bikes that are a year old.
By 2025, following Pramac's transition to Yamaha, Ducati will field just three factory bikes, ridden by Francesco Bagnaia, Marc Marquez, and VR46’s Fabio Di Giannantonio.
During the British Grand Prix, Dall’Igna mentioned that Ducati believes reducing their lineup to six motorcycles is the optimal decision for the brand.
He mentioned that he believes it isn't essential for new riders to start racing with factory equipment because of the stress it adds.
He explained to motogp.com that they ultimately decided to cut down the total number of bikes from eight to six. The ideal balance for them was to have three factory bikes and three bikes that were a year old.
"This arrangement is ideal for us, and I believe it holds significance because our aim in having a satellite team is to develop riders."
“In conclusion, new riders often benefit from not having the latest official bike, as it can add unnecessary pressure. Therefore, beginning with a bike from the previous year can sometimes be the better option.”
In response to the suggestion that competitors will have four factory bikes next year, Dall’Igna commented, “We are not complacent. Our goal is to win, and we must put in our utmost effort to maintain the bike's capabilities.
"However, I believe that the performance of the official riders is not significantly impacted by having four designated bikes."
"Using last year's motorcycle, we can still make advancements and identify the steps needed to enhance the bike."
Due to Ducati's choice to reduce its factory support, Fermin Aldeguer will compete on a 2024 model bike with the Gresini team next year for his debut. This is a change from the original plan, which anticipated him riding a 2025 model at Pramac after he signed directly with Ducati earlier this year.
