Ducati Dilemma: MotoGP Paddock Divided Over Martin vs. Marquez for Coveted Factory Seat
MotoGP competitors are divided on whether Martin or Marquez deserves the official Ducati position.
"Why isn't number 89 already assigned to the motorcycle?" – the contest for the secondary official Ducati ride generates differing views.
MotoGP competitors have shared their opinions on Ducati's roster for 2025, highlighting Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez as the top contenders.
Gigi Dall’Igna has made it clear that the upcoming weekend will be challenging as the time approaches to make a choice between Martin, Marquez, and Enea Bastianini.
A formal verdict is anticipated regarding Mugello, with Martin and Marquez leading the contenders.
Martin is at the forefront of the global championship, securing more victories in 2024 than any of his competitors and demonstrating unmatched steadiness among his peers.
It seems straightforward, doesn't it? However, hold that thought, as Marquez has undergone a significant transformation after teaming up with Ducati.
The eight-time world champion has continued his exceptional form throughout much of 2024, a trend that persisted at Le Mans, where he impressively climbed from 13th position to secure second place in both events.
Who do fellow racers believe deserves to be Francesco Bagnaia's teammate?
Kicking off with Fabio Quartararo, the Yamaha competitor conveyed to MotoGP.com: “The decision isn't mine to make, but it's evident that Martin is the quickest.
Marc still owns the previous year's motorcycle and demonstrated his incredible speed. Bastianini is equally speedy. I consider myself fortunate not to have to make a choice.
Aleix Espargaro expressed his confusion more openly, stating, "I can't comprehend why they haven't put number 89 on that motorcycle yet.
"What more could he possibly undertake? Last year, he contended for the championship with an independent team, a feat that has never been achieved before.
"Everyone agrees he's the quickest runner on the track, and that's obvious to me."
Luca Marini: "Marc Marquez is my choice!"
Miguel Oliveira stated, "Teaming up an eight-time world champion with a two-time world champion in MotoGP creates a very powerful team. That would be my choice."
Pedro Acosta: “Definitely, Martin. He's earned it the most and is at the forefront of the championship.”
Johann Zarco expressed, "In my view, Bastianini remaining in place is a possibility. Having an entirely Italian lineup within Ducati seems logical to me."
Maverick Vinales: "Me! [laughs]. Just kidding. That's not my role."
Joan Mir stated, "Currently, they are facing significant political challenges in making decisions that are best for them. However, I will not be the person deciding on their behalf."
Jack Miller stated, "Although there are three candidates already shortlisted, I'm considering resubmitting my application for the position."
