Dramatic Escape at Misano: Moto2 Bike Crashes into Aprilia Pit Garage During San Marino GP
Fortunate avoidance of disaster when a Moto2 motorcycle veers into Aprilia's MotoGP pit area at Misano
An incident in the pit lane causes a Moto2 motorcycle to veer uncontrollably into the Aprilia team's garage.
During a peculiar occurrence on Saturday morning at the San Marino Grand Prix, Moto2 competitor Unai Orradre, a track marshal, and members of the Aprilia MotoGP team narrowly avoided significant harm.
During the last practice session at Misano, the unmanned Forward Moto2 motorcycle, originally piloted by Orradre, veered into the Aprilia team's pit stall following an accident in the pit lane.
MotoGP.com's trackside journalist Simon Crafar observed the crash firsthand:
"I witnessed an individual stepping down from the pit wall, a task that seemed effortless, and failing to notice a motorcycle due to a large pack departing at the start of the Moto2 session."
He walked directly into the path of a Klint Forward Factory Team rider, Unai Orradre, resulting in unfortunate Unai being knocked off his bike by the individual who vaulted over his windshield.
I was astonished. Both of them were fine; they both stood up, moved away, and then took a seat.
However, his vehicle proceeded on its own down the pitlane, took a left turn, and directly entered Aleix Espargaro's pit area.
The object struck Aleix's motorcycle, tearing off the entire side panel. It appears to have injured the hand of one of the Aprilia team members it brushed past before continuing directly into the area where the data analysts and crew chiefs were stationed.
"Fortunately, the area was empty since it wasn't their [MotoGP] scheduled time. It appears that everyone was unharmed."
Photos depicted the Forward motorcycle lying on its side behind the Aprilia team's garage.
Aprilia informed Crash.net that their team members suffered no serious injuries but recognized that the situation could have potentially been much more severe.
Orradre, believed to have been involved in an incident with a marshal in the pit lane, was absent from the last Moto2 practice session. However, he returned to compete in the qualifying round on Saturday afternoon.
