Drag queen Crystal, known for her appearance on RuPaul's Drag Race UK, criticizes the new law mandating single-sex bathrooms in new bars, restaurants, and offices, calling it a diversion tactic by a struggling government to shift focus away from its failures. Crystal, who is of Canadian-British descent, believes the legislation specifically targets transgender individuals.

A drag queen has criticized the government’s plan to require single-sex restrooms in newly constructed bars, restaurants, offices, and shopping centers, labeling it a "distraction tactic aimed at trans individuals."

Crystal, a drag artist from Canada and Britain who appeared on RuPaul's Drag Race UK, shared with Sky News her view that the legislation serves as a diversion from a struggling government.

"The 38-year-old expressed skepticism about the policy's effectiveness in providing protection, noting a lack of evidence that mixed bathrooms pose a greater safety risk compared to gender-segregated facilities."

"Furthermore, there is significant evidence suggesting that the exclusive availability of gender-segregated restrooms increases the risk for many individuals."

"He mentioned that while the focus often includes transgender teenagers, it's important to consider cisgender individuals who are gender non-conforming and may not conform to traditional expectations of their assigned gender at birth."

"Individuals will face difficulties when strict regulations are imposed on verifying someone's gender before allowing them to use a restroom."

Crystal mentioned that offering a combination of single-sex and gender-neutral bathrooms is "a wonderful approach," while concentrating solely on single-sex bathrooms is "a misguided pursuit."

In this legislation, Kemi Badenoch asserts that the focus is on safeguarding women's privacy and dignity. However, it's debatable how much additional privacy and dignity is required beyond a locked and securely closed stall door.

"I don't believe there is a gender-specific entitlement to the privacy of handwashing separate from men.

"In our society, there is no separation based on sex. We share seats on trains, in theaters, and on the subway, sitting side by side."

"He emphasized that it was not a concern."

Author Jean Hatchet stated that women "must advocate for" single-gender restrooms.

"She emphasized that the focus is on women's needs, not on individual identity choices."

Men and women have distinct methods of using restrooms, and the manner in which men utilize these facilities often results in conditions that are not as accommodating for women. This includes having to contend with toilet seats that are left wet.

"This is unacceptable, and it overlooks the critical safety implications involved in setting up surveillance cameras that can be retrieved subsequently.

"She stated, 'This is the reality for women; this is the environment they inhabit.'"

This week, authorities declared that under the new proposed law, all new constructions and buildings undergoing significant usage changes must include designated restrooms for both men and women.

Facilities with gender-neutral restrooms can be offered alongside separate facilities for each gender, or used as an alternative when space is limited.

The proposed law does not apply to nursing homes, hotels, educational institutions, detention facility cells, or facilities used for early childhood services.

Kemi Badenoch, the Minister for Women and Equalities, stated that the new law will halt the increase of mixed-gender toilets, which she believes compromise the privacy and dignity of all individuals.
