Dovizioso Plays Coy on Potential Yamaha Test Role Amid MotoGP Comeback Speculations
Is Andrea Dovizioso eyeing a permanent MotoGP testing position with Yamaha?
The victor of 15 MotoGP races has yet to reveal his intentions for the future.
Ex-MotoGP competitor Andrea Dovizioso has stated that discussing a permanent Yamaha test position is premature, despite his recent sessions on the M1.
Dovizioso stepped away from his racing career midway through the 2022 season, facing difficulties in performance with RNF Yamaha. This came after he had taken a short break and joined the team in late 2021.
Previously associated with Honda and Ducati, the rider took part in a test session for Yamaha at the Misano circuit before the San Marino Grand Prix. This was in lieu of Cal Crutchlow, who is currently recuperating from hand surgery.
Dovizioso participated in a confidential private trial at Mugello as part of his preparation, while Yamaha is considering an additional session for the Italian racer in November.
This has ignited discussions about the possibility of Dovizioso taking on a full-time role as a test rider for Yamaha next year.
Opting for this strategy could be a logical step for the Japanese producer, considering his familiarity with the M1's performance highs in 2012 and its lows post-2021, alongside his previous collaborations with technical director Max Bartolini.
In response to inquiries about whether he was in talks with Yamaha for a test position, Dovizioso stated, "I'm unsure. Now is not the appropriate time to address this topic."
"They're engaging in numerous activities as they're establishing a secondary team alongside Pramac. They're exerting significant effort to make a return."
They have invested heavily, both financially and in terms of effort, to establish the optimal conditions.
"Progress is gradual, moving forward incrementally. Now isn't the appropriate time to discuss [a permanent testing position]."
"Spending additional days with them on the track was truly enjoyable, and then we'll find out what happens next."
Dovizioso mentioned that his speed during the Misano trial was "pretty decent," especially considering his two-year hiatus from riding, and he also praised his connection with the Japanese brand.
"A month prior, I conducted a trial at Mugello, and following that, upon my arrival here [at Misano], everything felt usual," he further stated.
"I managed to exert effort and regain my braking technique. It felt great because it allowed me to adopt an aggressive stance and increase my speed.
"The completion time was fairly decent, which is crucial. Over the span of two years, numerous events have unfolded.
"The bicycles are significantly speedier due to various advancements, including the tires. However, it was quite enjoyable to experience every aspect, despite being a second or a second and a half behind."
"Looking ahead, it's uncertain. We've established a strong connection with Yamaha, and my personal rapport with Max, built from my time with Ducati, is positive."
"Spending time with them was truly enjoyable. They find themselves in an odd circumstance."
"They need to bridge a significant gap. It's a process that requires time, with each step taken deliberately, all while fully grasping the situation, especially since their rivals are exceptionally formidable."
