Debate on Winglet Safety Heats Up After Iannone’s Crash at French MotoGP
IMAGE: Damaged Winglet
This image, captured by Gold and Goose, displays the harm inflicted on Andrea Iannone's Ducati following a crash during Saturday's session at the French MotoGP.
Noteworthy, considering the current discussions about the safety of winglets, is the fact that one of these aerodynamic components – specifically the lower one on each side of the Ducati fairing – did not detach cleanly from the bike.
Manufacturers involved in MotoGP are presently discussing the future use of winglets, with a primary worry being the impact of collisions between the winglets and riders.
At the beginning of the race in Argentina, Iannone made contact with Marc Marquez, causing the upper left winglet to detach smoothly. Ducati claims this incident backs their assertion that the winglets are not hazardous.
In contrast to his experience in Argentina, Iannone was not able to keep racing at Le Mans. However, if he had managed to get back on his bike, could he have been disqualified with a black flag?
