The recent debate within China's legal circles regarding the criteria for capital punishment follows a decision by a court in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region to confirm the death penalty for a local official who admitted to embezzling over 3 billion yuan (approximately US$422 million).
On August 27, the high court of Inner Mongolia rejected a legal appeal from Li Jianping, 64, who previously held the position of party secretary for the economic and technological development zone in Hohhot, the capital of the region, as stated on its website.
