David Croft Takes a Break from F1 Commentary: Harry Benjamin Steps Up for Emilia Romagna Grand Prix
What's the reason behind David Croft not being the commentator for the F1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix this weekend, and who's stepping in for him, Harry Benjamin?
In a notable departure from tradition, David Croft, who has been with Sky Sports since 2012, will be absent from the commentary box for the upcoming Imola race this weekend.
Since the 2012 Australian Grand Prix, Croft has consistently served as the primary commentator for Sky.
Croft's absence this weekend was expected, as it was announced before the season began.
Croft is set to take a break from his duties at Imola, Austria, and Azerbaijan, handing over the reins to Harry Benjamin for those events.
In February, the 53-year-old disclosed his desire to take a break, especially with an upcoming wedding on his agenda.
Earlier this year, Croft shared with The Independent, "It’s really about staying energized throughout the entire season. Age is catching up with me."
"I've made numerous sacrifices and let go of many things for the sake of my profession. It's important for me to dedicate some time to my loved ones now, instead of being continents away. Additionally, I'm tying the knot this year, so there's a wedding I need to plan!
"However, I also have the desire to just relax at home and watch a race. I wish to appreciate it. Perhaps by not providing commentary, I can gain new insights. While observing, I might notice certain aspects – I aim to experience the race from the perspective of a viewer."
Who is Harry Benjamin?
For followers of Crash.net, Benjamin is a familiar name due to his role as the former host of the MotoGP podcast.
Over time, he has provided commentary for Formula 2, Formula 3, and Porsche Supercup, and now serves as the F1 commentator for BBC 5 Live.
In 2023, Benjamin contributed to Sky Sports F1's children-focused broadcast.
In anticipation of his first appearance, Benjamin expressed his enthusiasm during the most recent episode of the Sky Sports F1 podcast, stating, "Absolutely thrilled. It's indeed a significant challenge, but I’m eager for it.
"Accomplishing it at Imola, of all places, and right next to Karun as well, is truly an honor for me."
Benjamin is set to join former F1 racer Karun Chandhok at Imola, as Martin Brundle is expected to miss another event.
