David Coulthard’s Mixed Verdict: Red Bull’s Struggle and Hope Amid F1 Turmoil
David Coulthard offers a candid evaluation of Red Bull's struggles
David Coulthard brings a welcome dose of positivity for Red Bull
David Coulthard is confident that Red Bull has the ability to return to their victorious ways in the current season.
Halfway through this season, the reigning champions in the constructors' category have seen their leading position in Formula 1 slip away.
Reigning champion Max Verstappen has not secured a victory in the last six Formula 1 races, referring to his car, the RB20, as "a monster", signifying a notable decline.
Former Formula 1 driver and Red Bull representative, Coulthard, remarked to Channel 4 during the Monza qualifiers last week, stating, "They certainly aren't performing at their previous levels. The lap times speak for themselves."
"They are at a disadvantage. The improvements have failed."
"They're no longer the standard for peak performance. They're aware of this reality and can't escape it."
"They must assemble the team who engineered an outstanding racing vehicle last year – a vehicle that clinched victory in seven races this year, yet its enhancements are failing – they have to discover a solution."
Adrian Newey, serving as the Chief Technology Officer for Red Bull, played a key part in creating the RB20. However, since the Miami race, he hasn't been involved in the day-to-day operations as he is preparing to depart from the team.
Christian Horner and Helmut Marko have rejected the idea that the team's recent struggles are because of Newey's upcoming departure.
This past weekend at the Italian Grand Prix, it was evident that Verstappen faced difficulties. He started the race in seventh position and crossed the finish line in sixth.
Coulthard commented on Verstappen's qualifying performance, stating, "This demonstrates the challenges he faced. He wasn't able to nail his final two attempts in qualifying."
"It's quite out of character for Max. It's one thing to slip up once, but twice? And to have identical lap times as Checo?"
Verstappen slammed his steering wheel in disappointment at Monza as Red Bull conceded they were clueless about the reason behind the RB20's decline in performance.
"Coulthard described him as spirited and highly passionate."
"When you're on top, everyone adores you. But when times get tough, that intense emotion resurfaces."
Verstappen's advantage in the championship standings has been reduced to 62 points over Lando Norris.
Red Bull now faces a challenging situation as their advantage in the constructor's championship has been reduced to a mere eight points over McLaren.
Considering McLaren's performance, they have arguably become the top contenders for the championship this season.
However, Coulthard maintained optimism regarding Red Bull's prospects, stating, "They have it within their power to manage it. Yet, they must tap into the car's latent capabilities."
"The improvements haven't been effective, yet they're capable of better. Despite this, they've managed to secure victories in seven Grand Prix races this season."
