David Coulthard believes that Red Bull has the potential to return to their race-winning ways this year.
The team that previously held the constructors’ championship title is no longer the leading force in Formula 1 at the halfway point of this season.
Champion driver Max Verstappen has not secured a victory in the last six grand prix races and referred to the RB20 as "a monster," highlighting a significant decline in performance.
Former F1 driver and current Red Bull ambassador David Coulthard commented to Channel 4 following the qualifying session at Monza last week: “They are unquestionably not performing at their peak. The lap times reveal the truth.”
“They are struggling. The improvements have not been successful.
"They are no longer the standard for top performance. They recognize this fact and cannot deny it."
"They need to gather the team responsible for last year's exceptional race car—a car that has secured seven victories this year. However, the recent upgrades have failed to deliver results, so they need to discover a solution."
Adrian Newey, the chief technology officer at Red Bull, was part of the team that created the RB20. However, he has not been involved in the race-to-race activities since the Miami event as he is preparing to depart from his position.
Christian Horner and Helmut Marko have rejected the idea that the team's decline is because Newey is about to leave.
During the Italian Grand Prix held last weekend, Verstappen’s struggles were evident. He secured the seventh position in qualifying and ended the race in sixth place.
Coulthard responded to Verstappen's qualifying performance by saying, "This highlights the challenges he faced. He couldn't perfect his final two qualifying laps."
"It's quite rare for Max to slip up like that. He could possibly make an error on one lap, but on both? And to have the same lap time as Checo?"
At Monza, Verstappen hit his steering wheel in anger, while Red Bull confessed they were unsure about what caused the RB20's drop in performance.
Coulthard mentioned that they are aware of his spirited and passionate nature.
"When you're on top, everyone admires you. But when you're facing challenges, that genuine fervor resurfaces."
Max Verstappen's advantage in the drivers' championship has been reduced to 62 points ahead of Lando Norris.
A more pressing issue for Red Bull is that their advantage in the constructor’s championship has now shrunk to a mere eight points over McLaren.
Considering McLaren's current performance, they might now be regarded as the frontrunners to claim the title this season.
However, Coulthard emphasized Red Bull's expectations, stating, "They have the ability to manage it, but they must tap into more potential within the car."
"The improvements have not been successful. However, they have the ability to succeed. They have managed to win seven grand prix races this year."
