Daniel Ricciardo Responds to Jacques Villeneuve’s Criticism: ‘I Would Never Talk Sh** About Someone
Daniel Ricciardo speaks on conflict with Jacques Villeneuve: “I would never badmouth someone”
Daniel Ricciardo has responded to the repeated critiques from Jacques Villeneuve.
Daniel Ricciardo has commented on his dispute with Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 Formula 1 world champion.
During the Canadian Grand Prix, Villeneuve harshly criticized Ricciardo, raising doubts about his suitability for Formula 1.
The ex-Williams racer questioned in Montreal, "Why is he still in Formula 1? Why?"
"For the past four or five years, we have been hearing the same statement: 'We need to improve the car for him.' Frankly, it's been five years of this. No, this is Formula 1."
Following the incident, Ricciardo responded with an impressive performance over the weekend, saying: "I'm still not sure what he said exactly. However, I've heard he's been badmouthing me. But that's typical of him.”
During an interview with Mirror Sport, Ricciardo expressed his frustration over the criticism, noting that Villeneuve, being a former F1 driver, should understand the challenges of the profession.
In Montreal, Jacques made some comments that rubbed me the wrong way. I felt challenged and thought, 'Okay, if you want to see what I'm made of, bring it on'. I believe I handled the situation pretty well," he remarked.
"Usually, I don't go through it, but the team informs me about it to get me ready for any comments that have been made. It does get to me… considering that Jacques is also a world champion, he is someone who understands the sport."
I might remark about other drivers and say something like, 'Yeah, they've been having a tough time,' but I would never speak badly about anyone because I understand and can empathize with their experiences. Participating in this sport is incredibly unique and challenging, and not just anyone can do it.
"I felt quite let down, but I figured, 'If this is how some individuals see it, it's a chance for me to show them that I'm still present'. I turned it into a benefit, and that's okay. I'm aware that everyone has their viewpoints. My mindset was, 'Instead of getting upset, use it as a drive'."
Since that time, Ricciardo's performance has consistently improved, showcasing several remarkable races.
Before the summer break, it appeared that Ricciardo might rejoin Red Bull to team up with Max Verstappen.
"It's definitely starting to come together more," he mentioned. "Canada was certainly a more significant breakthrough. I had the new chassis in China, and it performed better in Miami."
"I experienced a few setbacks, and when we got to Canada, the stakes were high. There were rumors about me possibly losing my position, and I thought, 'Alright, what's been happening this year hasn't gone as planned. I need to make some adjustments.'"
