Christian Horner Comments on Aston Martin’s ‘Premature’ Celebration of Adrian Newey’s Arrival Ahead of Contract End
Christian Horner Responds to Aston Martin's Early Celebration of Adrian Newey's Joining
Red Bull's leader, Christian Horner, has commented on Aston Martin's announcement regarding Adrian Newey, as reported by Lewis Larkam from Baku.
Christian Horner remarked that Aston Martin's celebration of acquiring F1 design icon Adrian Newey was a bit too early, considering he remains contractually tied to Red Bull.
On Tuesday, Aston Martin officially announced the acquisition of Newey during a significant press event hosted at their cutting-edge Silverstone facility, just before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this weekend.
Newey successfully arranged to leave his existing contract with Red Bull ahead of schedule, enabling him to begin his new role at Aston Martin in March 2025. However, he is still officially under contract, even though he has already reduced his involvement with Formula 1 activities.
Aston Martin revealed that they have acquired Newey, who was present at Silverstone together with the team's leading figures such as the owner Lawrence Stroll, and drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
"Horner informed reporters, including Crash.net, during Friday's press conference in Baku that Aston's announcement was clearly significant."
Adrian has consistently been someone who goes his own way. It was a significant occasion for the team, and they decided to mark the event, maybe a bit too soon, given that he hadn't yet concluded his agreement with Red Bull Racing.
"Clearly, it was a significant occasion for the team."
Horner remarked, "It wasn’t much of a shock. It became more and more obvious that this was the direction he was heading in, instead of opting for retirement or joining a different team.
Clearly, his next endeavor will present a fresh challenge, and his departure next year will be a bittersweet moment for us all. We extend our sincerest wishes for his future success and reflect warmly on the nearly two decades of shared experiences, embracing both the triumphs and trials we've faced together.
"We are optimistic about what lies ahead and believe we are in a strong position for it."
Horner commended Newey for his distinctive approach to work, noting that Aston Martin will surely gain from his wealth of experience.
"Adrian stands out for his inventiveness," Horner remarked. "He's not just any ordinary designer. To my knowledge, he's the sole individual in F1 who continues to utilize a drawing board for his work.
"Undoubtedly, the phase of familiarizing with one another's methods and approaches will occur. However, his distinctiveness stands out in various aspects. Aston plans to leverage his extensive experience."
