Charles Leclerc Shatters Monaco ‘Curse’ with Emphatic Home Grand Prix Victory
Charles Leclerc dismisses the notion of a Monaco F1 'curse'
Charles Leclerc has expressed his skepticism towards the idea that he was fated to never secure a victory at his local F1 competition.
Charles Leclerc has always dismissed the idea that a curse prevented him from winning his home Formula 1 race in Monaco.
The Ferrari racer had a stellar weekend in his home country, turning his pole position into his sixth Formula 1 victory and achieving his much-anticipated first win at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Previously, Leclerc had secured pole position twice in Monaco, yet failed to clinch a win because of strategic missteps and mistakes behind the wheel. Additionally, the driver from Monaco faced setbacks in the junior racing levels at Monte Carlo, sparking speculations that he might be plagued by bad luck at the iconic track.
Leclerc stated, "I was never convinced about the curse. Yet, on the two chances I got to clinch victory here, it seemed incredibly challenging. First, I wasn't able to even begin the race. During the next, we probably didn't opt for the best strategy, in my opinion. Thus, missing out on those victories was extremely exasperating."
"The reality is, as a driver, it's unpredictable when the next chance to clinch a victory will come, particularly when it's your home race. This holds even truer when your home race takes place in Monaco, a track renowned for its uniqueness, its challenging nature, and the complexity of ensuring everything goes flawlessly over the weekend, which we managed to achieve."
"Today presented another chance. I remembered the emotions from being in similar situations twice before. Clearly, I was eager to clinch the win today, which brought some nerves. However, as I've mentioned, the moment I don the helmet and settle into the car, all those feelings fade away."
"Subsequently, it revolves around optimizing the performance of the vehicle at hand, taking into account the tires and all the elements I needed to consider to navigate this race in the most effective manner. Thus, it's primarily about the time leading up to the race and before donning the helmet."
Leclerc's recent win, his first since the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix, has narrowed Max Verstappen's lead in the championship to 31 points, following a challenging weekend for the Red Bull driver who managed to secure only a sixth-place finish.
Yet, Leclerc hasn't started to consider the possibility that his victory in Monaco might spark a championship contest this season.
"He emphasized that he's currently not focusing on the championship and believes it's too soon in the season to do so."
"We're still assessing the effectiveness of the improvements we've implemented in Imola, and it remains to be seen what impact they'll have. The focus now is on making the most of every weekend, with the hope that, gradually, we'll achieve our goals."
