Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: ‘Upgrades Not Enough for Consistent Wins’ Amidst Monza Victory
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are ‘insufficient’ to ‘secure victories for the remainder of the season.’
"Will it be adequate to consistently win races from now until the season concludes? I doubt it, but we've made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance further in order to regularly compete with McLaren for the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy to outpace McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update package aimed at addressing their bouncing issues for the Italian Grand Prix.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
“We need to be careful,” he stated. “Since Monaco, we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, given that Monaco's track suited our car's characteristics at that moment. Monza, too, has a unique and distinctive layout.
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a specialized rear wing for this track, contributing to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think this will make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on other tracks."
“We still have plenty of work ahead of us, but I'm delighted to have achieved this in Italy.”
Although Leclerc has faced difficulties since Monaco, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referencing similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge and Singapore will likely be unique as well. Therefore, we must recalibrate our approach. We adjusted our strategy between Monaco and Montreal, but as evidenced by the significant differences from one weekend to the next, the shift was substantial."
“We experienced three or four of the toughest races of the season while trying to figure out our car's issues. Hopefully, we won’t face another challenging stretch like that, and I don't expect we will."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that would be unrealistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
