Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades at Monza Not Enough to Sustain Winning Momentum Against McLaren
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's improvement is ‘insufficient’ for ‘securing victories for the remainder of the season’
"Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? I don't believe so at this point, but we have made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance in order to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Charles Leclerc secured his second win of the season by using a one-stop strategy to outperform McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, demonstrating that McLaren had the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update package for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to “exercise caution”.
"We need to be careful," he mentioned. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco was uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza is another track that is very unique and distinctive."
"There were mostly straight sections and few turns on this track. We equipped a rear wing specifically designed for this course, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had another enhancement that I believe narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make our car the top contender for the rest of the season on different tracks."
"We still have plenty of work ahead of us, but I'm truly pleased to have achieved this here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since Monaco, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari is only 39 points behind Red Bull.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referencing previous discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
“We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but the situation in Baku might be quite different, and Singapore could present another unique challenge. Therefore, we need to prepare anew. We managed to adjust from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the transition between those two weekends was substantial.”
"We experienced some of our most challenging races of the season while attempting to figure out our car's issues. Hopefully, we won't face a similar string of tough races moving forward, and I believe that won't happen."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as this isn't realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the remainder of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
