Challenges in Catalunya: Quartararo’s Quest Complicated by Falls, Delays, and Yellow Flags
Fabio Quartararo faced setbacks, including a fall, a technical hiccup, and yellow flag incidents, which relegated him to 14th position, spoiling his Friday session in Catalunya.
On Friday at the Catalan MotoGP, Alex Rins secured a straight path to Qualifying 2, whereas his teammate from Monster Yamaha, Fabio Quartararo, experienced a more challenging afternoon.
A mishap initially led to the French driver losing ten vital minutes waiting for an adjustment in the chain length, and subsequent yellow flags hindered his last attempt to break into the top ten.
"Team director Massimo Meregalli expressed his delight for Alex making it into Q2 at his home Grand Prix, stating that it's the position he deserves to be in."
If it weren't for Fabio's accident, the setbacks during pit stops, and the yellow flags towards the end, we believe Fabio possessed both the speed and rhythm necessary to secure a spot in the top 10.
The French rider, who was one of seven to crash in the afternoon session (with Brad Binder and Fabio di Giannantonio each having two falls), mentioned that despite the warm track conditions, heating up the tyre's left side was challenging.
Despite the occurrences and caution periods, Quartararo believed he was still unable to take advantage of the additional traction provided by new soft tires, finishing 14th with a 0.790-second deficit.
"The speed was quite impressive. However, failing to hit Q2 is far from ideal," he remarked. "I'm capable of achieving a '39.6 in terms of speed, so how come when it comes to the time trial, I only manage a ‘39.3? This is something that puzzles me.
"Alex, looking at the speed and a single lap, it makes a significant impact. However, for us, that's not the case. Even during the Mugello test, completing just one lap was a challenge for us. We need to examine the reasons behind this."
"Obviously, having less fuel contributes to my lap time improvement. However, I'm puzzled as to why we can't progress at the same pace as the others."
Quartararo lauded Yamaha's decision to implement new aerodynamics, highlighting its benefits for corner entry.
"However, he mentioned that they are focusing on different aspects which could significantly increase their efficiency."
